On the eve of Independence Day 31 August 1957, the Union Jack was lowered by En. Tahir Abdul Majid accompanied by the song God Save the Queen played for the last time as a sign of the end of the British administration in Malaya. The lowering of the Union Jack was greeted with a loud spontaneous applause and cries of "Merdeka" which rocked the whole field

Jalur Gemilang was first created in the Federation of Malaya flag designing competition by a 29 year old En. Mohamed Hamza in 1947.

After Sabah and Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaya in 1963, several provisions of the Constitution were amended and the nation's name was changed to Malaysia.
